Billiard that has been known in Europe since the 15th century, was not easily brought to the United States. Apart from great distances, freight course also very expensive. Michael Phelan, owner of New York's Billiard Parlor, since 1850 has started campaigning and organizing competitions to be a billiard prestigious sports that time. He also published a book Billiards Without Masters who sells. Up to 1875 the book has been reprinted 10 times.

As a maker of billiard tables, Phelan was the one who took the initiative to add marker points around the table (diamonds) to facilitate the players hit the ball, especially banks hit shots. In the unofficial American Billiard game championship in 1858 Phelan became champion by defeating Ralph Benjamin of Philadelphia and is entitled to a cash prize of US $ .1,000.

When Phelan retired from various games in 1863, Kavanagh still won the game to earn the honorary title as a true billiard champion in 1865 Phelan formed The American Billiard Players Association.
